Are you familiar with the Marula tree? Otherwise, it’s a beautiful African tree that produces wonderful and delicious fruits! Apparently a delicious fruit that intoxicates elephants …? The story goes on for years … it has even become a liquor called “Amarula” for lovers (by the way, it’s very tasty like Baileys)!
origin
The story dates back to the 1970s (1974 to be exact). A man named Jamie Uys produced two documentaries called “Beautiful People” (he also directed “Gods Must Be Crazy”). In particular, the footage of wild animals getting drunk after eating the fruits of Marula was an immediate hit (and won the highest documentary award). Since then, millions of people are still persuaded that elephants are really intoxicated with such “powerful” fruits! The question is, is that true?
Genuine information or complete fallacy?
Sorry to disappoint you, but unfortunately (unfortunately) (depending on how you see it …) the story is absolutely wrong! In fact, the footage of Jamie Uys was completely staged and the animals were actually fed alcohol (it’s hard to believe I know …). The directors soaked the food before shooting! Today the movie would have caused a scandal, but it was a different story at the time!
Apparently, if this whole “myth” were true, then any person (or animal) would have to consume 25% of their body weight (at a time) with fruit to get drunk. Not very realistic! 😉
Fruit characteristics
Marula fruits are very rich in vitamin C and nuts are full of protein! In other words, fruits are a delicacy not only for elephants, but also for most animals in the African savanna! Impalas, kudus, nyalas, baboons, cape iboonoko and other creatures also eat this delicious treat. They either get it directly from the ground or get it thanks to the pachydermata that rock the tree to reach the prize.
