Matthew and I have traveled most of southern Africa, but eventually decided it was time to head further north to Zambia. The two of us have been on safari in Africa for the past two years, but have never reached Zambia for any reason. Known as one of the last intact African wilderness, Zambia is a place to appreciate nature.
Our dwelling
During our stay in Zambia, we stayed in a thatched cottage in the Luangwa Valley. Located on the banks of the Luangwa River, it was a great place to watch games. From time to time, we witnessed a buck, an elephant, or a herd of buffaloes coming to the riverbank to drink water every day.
After months of sleeping in a tent on a thin paper mattress, staying in the cottage felt like heaven. Don’t get me wrong. Both Matthew and I enjoy camping, but after a while I think we’ll start missing out on small luxuries such as beds.
After a nice long shower, I sat on the veranda overlooking the valley at sunset. There are many beauty in the world, but the sunset is still one of the most beautiful. Some people laughed out loud in the background, but they looked very quiet. All I really heard was the soothing sound of water and birds calling each other softly. I was relieved and soon joined when Matthew returned with a bottle of wine from a local supplier.
I enjoyed dinner and wine the rest of the night, but most of it was a natural sound. It’s been almost two years and we can say that we are more peaceful. What has become a hot topic these days is the small number of people who enjoy nature. Matthew argued that if people were surrounded by nature and could go camping, safaris, and even picnics, they would feel more enjoyable in life. However, life seems to be in a hurry these days.
Country of freedom
The next day, we left early in the morning on the first day’s drive. Zambia is well known for its vast protected wilderness areas. It is a sad truth that African wildlife areas are rapidly disappearing due to economic growth and the accompanying African wildlife, but countries like Zambia have promised to save African wildlife and its lands. I am.
The Luangwa Valley is a particularly bird-loving paradise. According to tourist information, they have recorded more than 400 species of birds in the area alone. During the drive, I saw quite a few antelopes, buffalos and zebras. But it was only after lunch that we were given a special scene of survival play. Not everyone enjoys witnessing the oldest natural war between lions and hyenas.
Lions are much stronger between the two groups, but hyenas have another factor in their favor. That’s their number. This was a battle for territory. It is a well-known fact that male lions, in particular, are passionate about hating hyenas. It was Lion’s tremendous pride, which looked like a match without a contest, but did not underestimate the cunning of hyenas. Hyenas seemed to be trying to win this, threatening with a larger number of them. But when the young male lion rushed forward, we knew it was over.
The lion was so strong that the hyena soon escaped. I was thrilled throughout the trials and didn’t know if I should see this manifestation of hatred and domination, or just look away, but only the sound was horrifying. Some say it was fortunate to be able to witness such a battle, but I think it was a pain. Matthew tried to shoot it as much as he could, but it was difficult to focus because everything was done so quickly. This was definitely a very rare sight. Game rangers usually pay more attention to the aftermath so as not to take tourists to the actual killing site. When we talked to the Game Ranger, he told us that we observed something really unusual. Because most of these situations only happen at night. This time, I was in the wrong place at the right time.
After that, we returned to the cottage. I think we were both a little surprised after the episode. I’ve seen videos of this kind of battle before, but in my life I never imagined witnessing such a thing in real life.
Well, I’m sure Matthew and I won’t feel the same no matter how much the fight happens. It was an event that changed our lives forever. It reminded me that there are many more things in life than the hustle and bustle of the city. The life is for fun and you need to experience all the thrills from the bottom of your heart. Zambia has proven to be one of the most thrilling African safaris we have ever experienced. Yes, we are back!
