For decades, we have faced many environmental abuses and problems around the world. Among these abuses are mining, illegal logging and deforestation, improper waste disposal from factories and other infrastructure, and other complex environmental issues. In addition, large wildfires struck continents such as Australia and California this year, burning several hectares of forest and endangering wildlife life.
According to DW Zimmermann in 2016, five of the world’s biggest environmental problems are: (1) Air pollution and climate variability. (2) Deforestation; (3) Species extinction; (4) Soil degradation; (5) Overpopulation.
Air pollution and climate variability
Air pollution occurs when the air or air we breathe is occupied by higher levels of CO2 or carbon dioxide than oxygen or other gases. These CO2s are primarily generated from factory combustion, coal and fossil fuel combustion, and other industrial activities, increasing from 280 200 years ago to about 400 ppm today to one millionth (ppm). I am contributing. Result: Climate change.
In 2012, the World Health Organization estimated that one in nine deaths in 2012 was due to a disease caused by carcinogens and other toxins in the polluted air.
Solution: Replace fossil fuels with renewable energy. Change the industrial process.
deforestation
Today, about 30% of the earth’s land is covered with forests. This is about 11,000 years ago before agriculture began. Approximately 7.3 million hectares of forest are destroyed each year, mainly in the tropics. Currently, only 6 or 7 percent of tropical forest covers the planet’s land area, which was 15 percent.
Solution: Deforestation and restoration of leftovers of natural forest.
Species extinction
Both land and water species were hunted legally and illegally. On land, wildlife is almost endangered for bushmeat, ivory, or medicinal purposes. At sea, huge fishing boats have wiped out a huge catch population. Habitat loss and destruction are also factors in mass extinction.
Solution: Call on the government to restore habitat and prevent further extinction of endangered species.
Soil deterioration
A long list of ways to cause overgrazing, single planting, erosion, overexposure to pollutants, land use diversion, and soil damage. The United Nations estimates that approximately 12 million hectares of farmland are undergoing serious degradation each year.
Overpopulation
The population continues to grow rapidly around the world. From 1.6 billion people in the 20th century, it is now about 7.5 billion people. It is estimated that by 2050 there will be nearly 10 billion people. The combination of growing world population and growing affluence puts greater and greater pressure on important natural resources, both land and water. Most of the growth is taking place on the African continent, and in South and East Asia.
Solution: Family planning and every family may have 2-3 children. Educational accessibility, especially for young girls in the tropics.
Among the five major environmental problems in the world are water pollution, inadequate waste treatment, inadequate drainage systems, mining, and a long list of environmental abuses, many of the smaller ones we face today. I still have a problem.
In the Philippines, its abundant biodiversity is threatened, most of which is due to human activities such as deforestation, deforestation, illegal fishing and illegal wildlife trade.
Despite the abuse of our environment, we are fortunate to have many social groups and environmental activists fighting for the protection and conservation of our environment.
There was the famous 17-year-old Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, who was internationally recognized for promoting the view that humanity is facing an existential crisis resulting from climate variability. She has also published several books that promote environmental protection and conservation. Among other things, “No one is too small to make a difference”, “Scenes from the Heart, Greta Thunberg (I know this is true): Truth, courage, save our planet (Brittanica) Whang, 2020).
She encourages everyone, especially young people, to speak out about climate variability and other environmental issues. Today, she has already gained many supporters around the world and is marching to save our planet.
In the Philippines, when environmental activist Gina Lopez chaired the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission and led Save Palawan, she cleaned up at least 17 tributaries of the heavily polluted Pasig River and nearby streams. A lot of environment-related work has been accomplished. The movement of the island.
Lopez ordered 23 mines to be closed, and many other mines to refuse or suspend operations. She also canceled 75 contracts to the mine she said threatened the nearby water supply.
However, in August 2019, Gina died of multiple organ failure at the age of 65 after losing the fight against a brain tumor. She was mourned by many, at best the ABS-CBN Foundation, a social development organization she had chaired for many years (Nytimes Gutierrez, 2019).
Today, the Philippines is considered second only to the most deadly countries for environmental activists, based on last year’s report of the murder of 34 people. Colombia, where 64 people were killed, was ranked number one (Bernanews Espina, 2020).
On the other hand, you do not need to join an environmental group to be recognized as an “environmentalist”. You can make a big difference yourself just by knowing and doing what is right for our environment. Simply put, biodegradable to non-biodegradable waste separation, canal and drainage system cleaning, tree planting, water and electricity savings, and other environmental activities. With this idea in mind, your efforts today are the future of our next generation. And along with our little way, we can make a difference. Protect our Mother Nature for today and for the future.
Please do something good. No one can see or recognize it, but future generations will.
