Factors to consider when creating a fish pond design

There are many factors to consider when creating a fishpond design. There is nothing worse than setting up a pond with fish and having problems with the location of the pond. I make a lot of fishponds myself, so I would like to share my expertise with you. I made a mistake, but I learned from doing research with other pond builders. Here are the main factors to consider before you start building your own pond with fish.

  • Pond location-First of all, you have to consider the location of your pond. The pond should be located in the shade from the afternoon sun. Think of it as sitting in full unprotected sun. The same is true for fish. If you’ve ever fished in a lake with bright sun, how do you find a fish? Yes, in the shade. It is important to monitor where the afternoon sun and shadows fall. This will help you locate the pond.
  • Soil type-Another important factor to consider is the type of ground on which the pond is dug. Is the ground full of rocks or just soil? Unless you have a backhoe, you’re probably digging a pond with fish by hand. Therefore, the type of soil is very important. You can use a prefabricated liner if it’s easy to dig, but all my ponds like rubber liners. The rubber liner gives you more design flexibility.
  • Electricity to your pond-You need to consider the power to your pond. You will need a circuit for your pond for a pump motor that takes water from your pond through your filter media. Other electrical items to consider are lighting, UV clarifiers, and other items that may require power. Be careful not to place the pond far from the power supply. Otherwise, the cost will increase depending on the distance. If you are not sure about electricity, be sure to consult an electrician.
  • Pond filtration-There are many ways to do filtration, but my suggestion is to choose based on the size of the pond. Naturally, larger ponds require better filtration. Many large ponds use skimmer boxes with waterfalls containing filter media. My rule is to always set the size of the filtration to the next size, based on the number of gallons of water in the pond. There are many types of filters available. Pond filtration, pressurized, non-pressurized, above ground. If the filtration is based on gallons of water, it is safe to choose the right system.
  • Pump motor-There are basically two types of pump motors. Underwater and above ground. I used both types. There are a few things to consider. If you have a large pond and it is more than 4 feet deep, you may want to stay away from submersible pumps. For example, if you need to walk in water that may be overhead, maintenance that requires the pump to be pulled up can be a daunting task. In this case, you will need a water pump. If your pump is hand accessible, the submersible pump will work for you.

As you can see, there are many things to consider when creating a fishpond design. Here are the main factors to consider. Once you have a pond, there are other things to consider. For more information on ponds and fish, please visit our website.

Marula Fruits-African sake for wildlife, or a complete myth?

Are you familiar with the Marula tree? Otherwise, it’s a beautiful African tree that produces wonderful and delicious fruits! Apparently a delicious fruit that intoxicates elephants …? The story goes on for years … it has even become a liquor called “Amarula” for lovers (by the way, it’s very tasty like Baileys)! origin The story dates back to the 1970s (1974 to be exact). A man named Jamie Uys produced two documentaries called “Beautiful People” (he also directed “Gods Must Be Crazy”). In particular, the footage of wild animals getting drunk after eating the fruits of Marula was an immediate hit (and won the highest documentary award). Since then, millions of people are still persuaded that elephants are really intoxicated with such “powerful” fruits! The question is, is that true? Genuine information or complete fallacy? Sorry to disappoint you, but unfortunately (unfortunately) (depending on how you see it ...
