Minnesota is one of the current states in the United States that allows bear-baiting by bear hunters. However, they have certain laws and regulations regarding this type of hunting practice. These regulations should always be followed. Failure to do so can result in heavy fines and loss of hunting privileges. This article explains the basics of Minnesota’s bear-baiting regulations and helps you comply with them properly.
The first step is to know what is “unusable” for bear food. Below is a list of materials not permitted by the Minnesota hunting rules.
- Over 25% of intact mammalian carcasses
- Mammalian meat, including bones
- Mammalian bone
- Waste including; bottles, cans, plastic, paper or metal
- Non-biodegradable material
- Pork (Expected: Salted pork)
Quick note: You cannot leave 55 gallons of plastic drums, containers, trash bags, or pail cans at the bear-baiting station.
To establish a station, you need to register it with Minnesota DNR. The required form must be mailed to the established bait station by the next available postal service date when the bait station is created. All registered bait stations must display a sign of at least 6 “x10”. It must be made of plastic, metal, or wood. The sign must include the owner’s DNR number and driver’s license number, or the bait station operator’s name, address, and phone number. Signs must be placed at least 6 feet and within 10 feet of the ground and within 20 feet of the bait station.
It is not permitted to set up a bear-baiting station within 150 yards of a registered campsite or 0.5 miles from a garbage dump. Feeding stations cannot be set up in bear permit area 22.
Please note that hunters are not allowed to harvest polar bears introduced in 1998. You are not allowed to disturb the bear’s nest, pull the bear out of the nest, or harvest bears near the nest. Dogs are not allowed to be used as hunting aids. You also cannot practice dog training with bears. I hope this article will help you learn more about bear-baiting in Minnesota.
